A new initiative for digital accessibility: UND Strive for 85
Through its commitment to creating an inclusive and accessible learning environment for all students, the University of North Dakota is launching “UND: Strive for 85.” This university-wide digital accessibility initiative aims to create a more inclusive and accessible learning environment by enhancing the accessibility of all Blackboard Ultra courses.
Inspired by successful models from leading institutions, “UND: Strive for 85” focuses on significantly improving course content accessibility using tools such as Blackboard Ally. Faculty are encouraged to initially aim for an average accessibility score of 85% or greater for all Blackboard Ultra courses and for documents within each course by spring 2026. This dual goal ensures that UND is providing students with more accessible learning materials and experiences, recognizing their diverse needs. This goal will also provide a solid foundation upon which UND will continue to build as everyone works toward full compliance with ADA Title II regulations.
To help faculty meet this goal and continue on their path toward course accessibility, the Teaching Transformation & Development Academy is providing live training as well as resources and support available through its Creating Accessible Content page. Access to Deque University will soon supplement these resources with on-demand training on a wide range of topics, available to all UND employees. Additional information and support is also available from the University Digital Accessibility Committee.
Though not the last step, striving for an 85% or higher Blackboard Ally score is an important step towards realizing the Americans with Disabilities Act’s promise of equal participation for all at UND.
Let’s Strive for 85 (or higher!) and enhance accessibility for all!
