The University of North Dakota found itself in good company recently, in a sense — for being a good company!

More accurate, though, UND employees are part of a good company, according to results from Prairie Business Magazine’s annual survey of the “50 Best Places to Work.”

UND and the 49 other best places to work, in the magazine’s readership area, are featured alphabetically in the publication’s most recent issue.

Each September, Prairie Business Magazine takes reader feedback to compile its list of enviable employers. This time, the magazine sifted through more than 1,600 nominations.

“This recognition reflects the spirit of our people,” said Peggy Varberg, UND associate vice president for Human Resources. “We have a team of passionate, hard-working individuals who care deeply about our students, are committed to student success and the fostering of a supportive and collaborative campus.

“Thank you to our entire campus community for making this such an inspiring place to learn, teach, and grow.”

The magazine featured top-ranked companies from three states and one Canadian province, including nearly three dozen companies from North Dakota, eight from Minnesota and six from South Dakota.

Grand Forks was home to 10 of the honored companies, including UND; while Fargo was a headquarters for 15 of those listed.

Other honored companies have hometowns in Crookston, Bismarck-Mandan, Dickinson, Grafton, Jamestown, Minot, Park River, Rochester, Wahpeton, Watertown and Watford City, as well as Edmonton, Alberta.

UND boasted one of the larger workforces on the list with 2,722 benefitted employees. However, Varberg noted, that UND employs closer to 5,000+ if one factors in all categories of workers. Other big employers on the list were Marvin of Warroad, Minn.; DigKey in Thief River Falls, Minn.; and Altru in Grand Forks.

“These companies continue to lead the way, showing the importance of company culture, advancement opportunities, flexibility and collaboration,” the magazine stated in its preamble to the list.
