Chuck Haga is a journalist and adjunct professor in the Department of Communication at the University of North Dakota.

Born and raised in Valley City, N.D., Haga entered UND as a freshman in 1967. After time away from his studies to work and start a family, he earned a bachelor’s degree in History in 1976 and a master’s degree in Modern European History in 1978.

He also studied Norwegian emigration history, language and newspapers at the University of Oslo from 1978 to 1979 on a Rotary Foundation fellowship.

While a student at UND, Haga served as editor of the student newspaper, the Dakota Student, from 1969 to 1971. This experience led to a career in journalism – starting as a reporter for the Grand Forks Herald, then working as a staff writer for the Star Tribune of Minneapolis-St. Paul.

After 20 years with the Star Tribune, Haga returned to the Herald in 2007 until his retirement in 2013. Since 2022, Haga has written a weekly column for the Herald.

In 2012, Haga began teaching news writing classes as an adjunct professor in the UND Department of Communication.

Haga has a son, Peter, and three grandchildren, Morgan, Emma and Mason, the latter of whom is a UND engineering graduate.
