VIDEO: UND celebrates Black History Month

President Armacost and Art Malloy, VP for Student Affairs, discuss upcoming events, significance of Black History Month

In this video message, President Andrew Armacost and Art Malloy, vice president for Student Affairs, discuss upcoming events in celebration of Black History Month at the University of North Dakota.

Malloy remarks that this year is the 99th year in which Black History Month has been celebrated, and that it is a time to learn about the Black experience in the United States and the coalitions across history that have allowed Black Americans to be full participants in American democracy.

Armacost asks about the Hilyard Center on campus — named for UND’s first student of color, James Hilyard Duty — as well as what the community can look forward to through the rest of February.

On Thursday, Feb. 20, the Hilyard Center will host a painter for its first installment of the Rosa Park Series. Evan Struck will be in the Memorial Union, painting a famous historical figure within 60 minutes.

On Friday, Feb. 21, UND is hosting pilot Kenyatta Ruffin for a fireside chat, also in the Memorial Union. A United Airlines captain, former F-16 fighter pilot and former White House Fellow, Malloy refers to Ruffin as a “rockstar.” Robert Kraus, dean of the John D. Odegard School of Aerospace Sciences, will also take part in the conversation with Ruffin.

The following week, on Thursday, Feb. 27, there will be a presentation of “The Power of Music in Black History,” which Malloy says will be a video presentation followed by a discussion on the influence and evolution of Black music in the United States. He will be hosting the event, as well.

Malloy directs viewers to the Community & Belonging events webpage to stay informed on upcoming events.
