UND’s ‘Frozen Four’ Timeline

From Troy, N.Y., to Tampa — and now Las Vegas — the UND men’s hockey program has built a Frozen Four legacy* to be proud of. As UND prepares for the 2026 tourney, here’s every national championship win at a glance:

No. 1 

Date: March, 14, 1959.

Setting: Troy, N.Y. (Renssalaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) Fieldhouse.

Opponent: Michigan State Spartans.

Final Score: 4-3.

Days of the Hrkac Circus in 1987.
Days of the ‘Hrkac Circus’: The 1987 national championship team (seen above at the old Ralph Engelstad Arena) was one of the more storied collection of players in school history, led by eventual Hobey Baker winner Tony Hrkac (rhymes with “Circus”), Bob Joyce, Steve Johnson and Ian Kidd and backstopped by future NHL All-Star Ed Belfour. The ’87 team set an NCAA record for most wins in a season with 40, capping if off by beating Michigan State 5-3 at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit, for the program’s 5th all-time NCAA title.
