UND Aerospace seeks alumni stories for 9/11 documentary
Project marking 25th anniversary of Sept. 11 attacks will preserve alumni experiences and examine lasting impact on aviation
As the nation marks the 25th anniversary of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, UND Aerospace is asking alumni who were working in the aviation industry at the time to share their memories and experiences.
The stories will become part of a collection intended to preserve firsthand accounts of Sept. 11 and its impact on aviation for current and future generations of students. The Aerospace Network will use the personal histories to produce a documentary exploring how the attacks affected individuals and transformed the aviation industry.
“I’m approaching the documentary with a very simple philosophy — each of us remembers where we were on 9/11,” said David Kuznicki, audiovisual producer and director of Aerospace IT. “But it changed all of our lives in different ways. I believe we’re gathering a collection of important perspectives that have never been heard or documented before.”
Most students attending UND today were not yet born when the attacks occurred and did not experience firsthand the profound changes that followed for the aviation industry, the United States and the world. By documenting the experiences of UND Aerospace alumni, the project will help future generations understand the significance of Sept. 11 through the perspectives of those who lived and worked through it.
“We’ve reached out to our alumni to gather their memories of that day, and in the coming year we will share some of their stories,” said Robert Kraus, dean of UND Aerospace. “Today we remember those we lost, honor those who served and reaffirm our commitment to never forget.”
The documentary is expected to be completed in 2027. UND Aerospace alumni who are willing to share their experiences can submit their stories through the project’s online form.
