Adaptation of novel by Louisa May Alcott marks final production for University of North Dakota’s historic Burtness Lab Theatre

Editor’s note: In the UND LEADS Strategic Plan, the Service core value calls on the University to “promote the arts and humanities, which contribute to the cultural vibrancy of the state and help attract and retain talent in our communities.” The announcement below highlights another in a long line of productions by the UND Department of Theatre Arts, all of which are staged and opened to the public with exactly that Service commitment in mind.

UND Theatre opens the second semester of the 2025-26 season with “Little Women” by Kate Hamill, adapted from the novel by Louisa May Alcott — a classic story you will not want to miss.
Jo March isn’t your typical Victorian lady. She’s indecorous and headstrong, and one day she’s going to be a great American novelist. As she and her sisters grow up in the middle of the Civil War, they strive to be brave, intelligent and imaginative young women. But as adulthood approaches, each sister must negotiate her private ambitions with society’s expectations. In a war-torn world defined by gender, class and personal tragedy, Jo March gives us her greatest story: that of the March sisters, four dreamers destined to be imperfect little women.
For more than 60 years, UND Theatre Arts has brought you outstanding performances in the Burtness Lab Theatre. Little Women will be the last production in the lab as it transitions to the new performance space in Starcher Hall next season. If you have been a long-time patron, or if this is your first experience in the space, do not miss out on this historic event.
UND Theatre Arts would also like to thank its community partners, Red River Valley Fiber Arts Guild and North Star Quilter’s Guild.
UND Theatre students, faculty and staff look forward to seeing you at the show.
