Sharing the road is an important concept that applies to all types of transportation, including cars, bikes, and pedestrians. Drivers should be aware of their surroundings and give bicyclists ample space when passing. Cyclists and pedestrians, in turn, should follow traffic laws and be visible to drivers at all times. Remember to always be courteous and patient, and do your part to keep our roads safe for everyone. By working together, we can create a safer and more enjoyable environment for all road users.

Five Rules of the Road

According to the League of American Bicyclists, the following 5 Rules of the Road will help prepare you for a safe and fun bicycling adventure, no matter where you're riding!

1. Follow the Law: You have the same rights and responsibilities as drivers. Obey traffic signals and stop signs. Ride with traffic; use the rightmost lane headed in the direction you are going.

2. Be Predictable: Make your intentions clear to everyone on the road. Ride in a straight line and do not swerve between parked cars. Signal turns, and check behind you well before turning or changing lanes.

3. Be Conspicuous: Ride where people can see you and wear bright clothing. Use a front white light and red rear light and reflectors when visibility is poor. Make eye contact with others and do not ride on sidewalks.

4. Think Ahead: Anticipate what drivers, pedestrians, and other people on bikes will do next. Watch for turning vehicles and ride outside the door zone of parked cars. Look out for debris, potholes, and other road hazards. Cross railroad tracks at right angles.

5. Ride Ready: Check that your tires are inflated, breaks are working, chain runs smoothly, and quick release levers are closed. Carry tools and supplies that are appropriate for your ride. Always wear a helmet.

Traffic Principles 101

1. Ride on the RIGHT: always ride with the flow of traffic. Do not ride on the sidewalk. Allow yourself room to maneuver around hazards

2. Yield to traffic in busier lanes: Roads with higher traffic volumes should be given right-of-way. Always use signals to indicate your intentions to move positions. Look behind you to indicate your move and make sure you can.

3. Yield to traffic in destination lane: Traffic in your destination lane has the right-of-way. Making eye contact with drivers lets them know that you see them. Signal and make your lane change early, before you need to.

4. Directional Positioning: Position yourself in the right-most lane that goes in the direction of your destination. Ride in the right 1/3 of the lane. Avoid being overtaken in narrow-lane situations by riding in the middle of the lane.

5. Speed Positioning: Position yourself relative to the speed of other traffic. Left-most lane is for fastest-moving traffic, right-most for slower traffic. Yield to faster moving vehicles by staying to the right in the lane.


The Nationally Recognized Program, Bicycle Benefits, is another reason to ride! Ride your bike to participating businesses to receive discounts on your purchase.
  • Participating businesses offer a discount to patrons that bike to their business.
  • Patrons who visit that business and show their Bicycle Benefits sticker on their helmet would receive the discount.
  • If patrons do not have a sticker yet, they would be able to purchase a sticker at any of the participating businesses or at Grand Forks Public Health.
  • As noted, this is a nationally recognized program with several businesses that participate across the country, so a person may even be able to find a participating business if back home or traveling.

LOG IN and record your BIKE IT Challenge stats TODAY! Jump on the stationary bike, rollerblades, or get outside and enjoy the fresh air with a free-standing bicycle. Each time you bike, you earn points!

Every 30 minutes or 5+ miles of biking you complete, you receive 10 points. Wear a helmet and earn an easy 5 points!

BONUS! Every day you ride your bike instead of driving, you earn 10 points. Examples include grocery shopping, going out to eat, running errands, etc.

Earn 100 points and get entered into a gift card drawing. Make it all the way to 200 points and be entered for a chance to win this Garmin Forerunner 955 Solar Watch! Every additional 100 points gives you an additional entry in the watch drawing.
