What is Blue Zones Project?

Blue Zones is a research project that sought to identify places around the world where people tend to live longer and healthier lives. These areas tend to find people reaching age 100 at a ten times higher rate than in the United States. These areas also found to have lower rates of chronic disease. The five original Blue Zones were Ikaria, Greece, Okinawa, Japan, Sardinia, Italy, Loma Linda, California, and Nicoya, Costa Rica.

What did they discover?

Blue Zones has discovered that the secrets to well-being and longevity are found in the Power 9. These principles are based on the idea of living longer, and how that can be achieved. As a part of the Power 9, Blue Zones recommends to "eat wisely." This consists of making your diet consist of 95% plant products. This emphasizes beans, fruits, vegetables, nuts and seeds.

80% Rule

"Hara hachi bu" - The Okinawan 2500-year old Confucian mantra said before meals, gives a reminder to stop eating when your stomach is about 80% full. The 20% gap of hunger and feeling full can be the difference in gaining or losing weight. People in longevity Blue Zones tend to eat their smallest meal in the late afternoon or early evening and then do not consume any more meals for the rest of the day. By practicing this 80% rule, it can help to stop overeating and be in tune with your hunger.
