To April 6: Master of Public Health program celebrates National Public Health Week

Physicians, nurses, and hospitals notwithstanding, a community’s public health system plays a major role in shaping the well-being of its residents. This is why UND and the UND School of Medicine and Health Sciences (SMHS) Master of Public Health Program are participating in the American Public Health Association’s National Public Health Week from April 2-6.

Highlights of the week include a public health trivia challenge and scavenger hunt; free health screenings; a Career Day featuring North Dakota State Senator Judy Lee, State Health Officer Mylynn Tufte, and Debbie Swanson, director of the Grand Forks Public Health Department; and a National Public Health Week proclamation by UND President Mark Kennedy.

“The MPH Program is proud to work with the many, many organizations in Grand Forks and at UND that are dedicated to improving the health of the community,” said Raymond Goldsteen, DrPH, director of the SMHS Master of Public Health Program. “National Public Health Week is a chance to showcase who we are and what we do.”

A full list of events can be seen here.

Public Health Career Day will be held at the SMHS on Wednesday, April 4 from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.; most of the week’s other events will take place elsewhere on campus. President Kennedy signed the NPHW proclamation April 3. Student Public Health Association President Anna Ojczyk introduced President Kennedy.

National Public Health Week in Grand Forks is sponsored by UND’s Master of Public Health Program, Public Health Education Program, Student Public Health Association, Nursing Program, and Department of Wellness & Health Promotion. Additional sponsors include the Grand Forks Public Health Department and Community Violence Intervention Center.
