Please nominate faculty for Awards of Excellence

Faculty members are the core of any institution as they mentor, inspire and teach students , contribute to research and creative activity, and engage in significant service. We seek to recognize and honor colleagues who devote extraordinary time and effort to these activities through the Awards of Excellence (formerly known as Outstanding Faculty Awards).  Sometimes, the work these faculty do is not visible to the whole university community, and in these cases, chairs, deans, and faculty colleagues may be in the best position to bring it forth.

The Awards of Excellence Committee will accept nominations through the official deadline of 4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 2.  Please consider nominating a department for a teaching or service award and please consider nominating a deserving colleague.  Please also share this information with students as they can also nominate faculty for certain awards. Nomination requires a simple electronic form (Nomination Instructions). Award criteria are linked to the nomination form.

The following awards are given:

  • Individual Undergraduate and Graduate Award – many characteristics describe good teaching (and the online award criterion give you a good sense of them). This award recognizes teachers who reach a high standard in regard to their teaching and interaction with students.  The Graduate/Professional Teaching award recognizes faculty who teach in the Graduate School, the Medical School, or the Law School.  Students can nominate for these awards.
  • Outstanding Faculty Development or Service Award – an award for an individual faculty member whose work contributes to the professional development of their colleagues (faculty development) or to the larger university and community (service).  Candidates for this award may have special strengths in one of these areas, or in both.  Again, we know there are many deserving candidates out there.  Please bring them to our attention.
  • Faculty Scholar Award – a prestigious award for a faculty member who excels in all three traditional aspects of a faculty member’s work:  teaching, research, and service. Please consider sending a letter of nomination for your strongest faculty.
  • Departmental Teaching Award – for a department which “demonstrates collective excellence and/or innovation in classroom/lab teaching, advising, and or curriculum development.”
  • Departmental Service Award – for a department which “collectively makes significant contributions in the areas of academic citizenship, professional/disciplinary service, and service to the community.”
  • Excellence in Collaborative Governance – an award given to one faculty, staff and student in recognition of outstanding contributions to the advancement of shared governance.

Thank you for the work you do in support of our students and colleagues,

— Tom DiLorenzo, Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs
