Kenneth Flanagan named chair of social work

On July 1, Associate Professor Kenneth Flanagan became chair of the Department of Social work in the College of Nursing and Professional Disciplines.

Flanagan, a licensed clinical social worker in North Dakota – has nearly 40 years of professional social work experience. He previously served as UND’s social work master’s program director and the gerontology minor coordinator. Flanagan received his bachelor’s degree in sociology from the Franciscan University of Steubenville in Ohio and holds master’s and doctorate degrees in social work from Ohio State University.

“I would like to thank Dr. Carenlee Barkdull for her leadership of the department during the past six years as chair,” Flanagan said. “I look forward to promoting the continued growth of our campus-based and online master’s of social work and bachelor of science in social work programs and the many practice and research endeavors of the faculty and staff.

“During the upcoming months, I look forward to the opportunity to meet and partner with alumni, stakeholders and those committed to enhancing the delivery of social work services in our state and region,” he added.

Caranlee Barkdull, who chaired the department for six years after serving as its graduate director, is moving into a new role in which she’ll devote more time to expanding the department’s child welfare mission and grant partnerships, building research and service infrastructure to strengthen UND’s strategic initiatives.

“This work is where my heart is and where I want to devote more time and effort,” Barkdull said. “It is key to our ongoing partnerships with tribal social service agencies and colleges.”

Diana Kostrzewski, CNPD interim dean, said, “The College appreciates the accomplishments of Dr. Barkdull during her time as chair. We look forward to collaborating with Dr. Flanagan as he assumes this important leadership role for the social work department. The department is an important one to both UND and the state. As dean, I am investing in two new clinical faculty positions in social work to meet the demand.”

Provost and Vice President for Academic affairs Tom DiLorenzo said, “We look forward to Ken’s leadership and are excited that Carenlee will be spending more time on the activities for which she’s passionate. I look forward to working with her in other capacities and hope to be personally involved in UND’s interdisciplinary efforts related to behavioral health and children’s welfare and safety issues.”
