Success Story: Signal Media Links

Signal Media Links – Fargo 2024

FARGO – Olasunkanmi Olanrewaju, the founder of Signal Media Links, has turned a passion for socio-cultural development, event planning, and media relations into a growing business that connects diverse communities. Originally from Nigeria, Olasunkanmi began his journey in 2003 while at university, organizing events and creating a platform to highlight student achievements. What started as a small campus project evolved into a successful company, and by 2006, he had officially registered the first iteration of his business in Nigeria. With the company’s growth, he expanded operations to include branches in South Africa and Liberia. In 2022, he established his U.S. headquarters in Fargo to continue growing his brand globally.

When Olasunkanmi moved to North Dakota, he wanted to replicate the success of his business in Africa by creating a company that celebrates cultural diversity through events and media. However, starting in a new market presented significant challenges, particularly in securing capital and establishing a local network. That’s when he turned to the North Dakota Small Business Development Center (ND SBDC) for guidance.

With help from Chris Erwin, a business advisor at the Fargo center, Olasunkanmi received the support he needed to navigate the U.S. business landscape. The ND SBDC assisted with key tasks, such as business entity registration, EIN filing, and business planning, ensuring his operations were on track. “They shared with me 70% of necessary resources and links to make my projection come through,” Olasunkanmi says, reflecting on the impact the ND SBDC had on his success. He also highlights how their guidance and networking support made it possible to expand his client base and secure valuable business relationships.

Although he initially struggled to secure funding from local banks, Olasunkanmi’s persistence and ability to communicate his vision for community-based events helped him secure support from local businesses and community organizations. This collaboration led to the successful execution of events like the All African Festival USA, which showcased his company’s ability to bring people together from diverse backgrounds. These events not only helped establish the company in the U.S. market but also strengthened its reputation for creating impactful, culturally inclusive experiences.

Olasunkanmi’s journey highlights the positive contributions immigration brings to North Dakota. By celebrating diversity and uniting communities through events, he fosters understanding and inclusion while making a lasting impact on the community he proudly calls home. Today, Signal Media Links continues to thrive in North Dakota and beyond, focusing on socio-cultural enrichment, talent discovery, and community engagement. The company’s successful expansion into the U.S. market has garnered attention for its innovative approach to media and event planning. Olasunkanmi remains committed to bringing together diverse communities, believing in the power of cultural exchange and the positive impact it can have on individuals and businesses alike.

For aspiring entrepreneurs, Olasunkanmi offers this advice: “Believe in yourself and turn your passion into a way of living.” His journey highlights how determination and access to the right resources can help turn a vision into a successful business. The support of the ND SBDC played a key role in helping him overcome challenges and achieve his goals, showing how guidance and a clear plan can make a big difference for small business owners.
