Migraine and Headache Awareness Month

June is Migraine and Headache Awareness Month (MHAM). Migraine is a complex neurologic disease that has been identified as the leading cause of years lived with disability in people under the age of 50 years. It directly affects more than 1 billion people worldwide with huge socioeconomic impact.

Chronic migraine affects approximately 2% of the world population. Migraine and chronic headache are found to be the second most frequently identified cause of short-term absence for non-manual employees, and amongst the five leading causes of emergency department visits.

One in four U.S. households include someone living with migraine disease. Nine out of ten people with migraine reported they could not “function normally” during days in which a migraine strikes. Nearly 3 in 10 require bedrest. Raising awareness and empowering advocacy about headache and migraine disease is critically important.
