“A Red River of the North Spring Prediction Model
Based on Principle Component Analysis”

(Grand Forks, North Dakota): The Department of Atmospheric Sciences Senior Project series will hold a presentation by Kevin Pieper titled “A Red River of the North Spring Prediction Model based on Principle Component Analysis” on Friday, April 20 at 3:30 p.m. in Odegard Hall, Room 114. All faculty, student and staff are encouraged to attend.

Abstract: The Red River of the North is a very unique river system. The river channel and basin have an extremely gentle slope and are the result of glacial Lake Agassiz; coupled with northern flow, the Red River of the North poses a spring time flood threat uncommon in other river systems. The annual probability of flooding is 47%. The Flood of 1997 is an example when nearly all meteorological parameters achieved record highs and their confluence produced a flood unparalleled in nearly 200 years. Accurately predicting spring flood conditions requires an in depth understanding of how meteorological parameters affect the geomorphology of the Red River Basin.

About Atmospheric Sciences: In addition to the Ph.D. program, the Department of Atmospheric Sciences offers a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science, and an undergraduate minor program in Atmospheric Sciences. Research areas of interest include atmospheric chemistry, surface transportation meteorology, radar meteorology, climate analysis, cloud physics, radiation, ground- and satellite-based remote sensing, aviation meteorology, hydrometeorology, mesoscale meteorology, data assimilation, numerical weather prediction, and weather modification. The Atmospheric Sciences department has played a major role in research for a number of Federal and state agencies, including the DOE, NASA, NDARB, FHWA, USDA, and DOD.
