Prospective Faculty Candidate
to Speak at Atmospheric Sciences Seminar

“Estimation of Rainfall Based on the Results
of Polarimetric Echo Classification”

(Grand Forks, North Dakota): Scott Giangrande, Research Assistant at the University of Oklahoma, Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies and NOAA/OAR National Severe Storms Laboratory in Norman, Oklahoma, will present a seminar on Friday, June 8 at 10:00 a.m. in Odegard Hall (room 356).

Giangrande is a prospective faculty candidate for University of North Dakota’s (UND’s) Department of Atmospheric Sciences. All students, staff and faculty are invited to attend.

Abstract:
The quality of polarimetric radar rainfall estimation is investigated for a broad range of distances from the polarimetric prototype of the WSR-88D radar. The results of polarimetric echo classification have been integrated into the study to investigate the performance of radar rainfall estimation contingent on hydrometeor type. A new method for
polarimetric rainfall estimation that capitalizes on the results of echo classification exhibits better performance than the conventional WSR-88D technique up to distances of 180 – 200 km. Separate statistics are obtained for widespread stratiform and warm season convective events to determine the significance of melting layer contamination.

About Atmospheric Sciences: In addition to the Ph.D. program, the Department of Atmospheric Sciences offers a Bachelor of Science, a Master of Science, and an undergraduate minor program in Atmospheric Sciences. Research areas of interest include atmospheric chemistry, surface transportation meteorology, radar meteorology, climate analysis, cloud physics, radiation, ground- and satellite-based remote sensing, aviation meteorology, hydrometeorology, mesoscale meteorology, data assimilation, numerical weather prediction, and weather modification. The Atmospheric Sciences department has played a major role in research for a number of Federal and state agencies, including the DOE, NASA, NDARB, FHWA, USDA, and DOD.
