Seminar Series Continues on Nov. 20th with Williams and Zimmer

The fall semester Brown Bag Seminar Series features graduate students providing presentations on their current research or recent internships.  The series continues at noon on Wednesday, November 20th, featuring grad students Karl Williams and Matthew Zimmer presenting “Precision Control for Autonomous Systems During Close Proximity NEO Operations”.

About the topic:

Close proximity operations for NEO missions are complex and a perfect solution has not yet been defined. One just has to look at the problems that arose during the sample attempts of the Hayabusa mission to see that complex gravitation causes anomalies to standard Keplerian orbits. In this SEED grant research, the Space Studies department has teamed with the Mechanical Engineering department to devise a control algorithm to improve the reliability and longevity of our spacecraft during close proximity operations.  Mechanical Engineering is focusing on various control methodologies and optimization while Space Studies is focusing mission dynamics. These dynamics include: orbital mechanics, perturbing effects, spacecraft design and accurate model simulations.

About the Presenters:

Karl Williams: From Viking, MN ; B.S. Mechanical Engineering from UND 2013, 2nd place in Mining at NASA Lunabotics Competition 2013 – UND Team RAPTOR.

Matthew Zimmer: From St. Joseph, MN; B.A. Mathematics from St. John’s University 2011, after graduation conducted research at Valparaiso University, Chile in Mathematical Biology, visited 11 countries.

This series of presentations will be held in the Space Studies Library at noon.  Lunch will be provided.
