Brown Bag Series Continues Featuring Denise Buckner

The fall semester Brown Bag Seminar Series features graduate students providing presentations on their current research or recent internships.

This series of presentations will be held in the Space Studies Library at noon.  Please join us with your own “brown bag” lunch.

Our next presentation in this series will feature Denise Buckner on Wednesday, November 15th at noon.

Presentation title:  Adventures in High Altitude Ballooning from Idaho to Mars”

About the topic:  Denise Buckner is a second year Space Studies Master’s student. This past summer she completed a North Dakota Space Grant Consortium summer fellowship at UND working to launch a high altitude balloon during the total solar eclipse in Rexburg, Idaho. This launch was part of a nationwide effort coordinated by the Montana Space Grant Consortium and NASA to capture video and atmospheric data of the eclipse from high altitudes along the eclipse’s path. This fall she organized a weather balloon launch extravehicular activity simulation during the Lunar Martian Analog Habitat IV mission. During this mission, the crewmembers assembled a radiosonde to measure temperature, pressure, and humidity in the atmosphere. They then filled and launched this device on a high altitude balloon while suited, then tracked it from inside the habitat.

About the presenter:   Denise is from St. Louis, Missouri and graduated from Saint Louis University with a B.S in Aeronautics with a concentration in Aviation Management and a secondary major in English. She is currently pursuing research in high altitude ballooning in the Martian environment. In her free time she loves listening to music, traveling, and reading journal and magazine articles.
