Three students from the University of North Dakota School of Law recently took on the challenge of the Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition in Atlanta, Georgia, marking the university’s first-ever participation in the prestigious global event.

The students—Elizabeth Drewlo, Denise Carpena, and Monica Birdbear—immersed themselves in a complex international legal hypothetical, drafting briefs for both sides of the case and preparing for oral arguments. Their efforts represented months of rigorous academic work and collaboration.

Although their faculty advisor, Kimberly Dasse, was unable to attend the competition, the team approached the experience with determination and curiosity. Along the way, they connected with peers from universities around the world and gained valuable insight from judges representing a wide range of international perspectives.

A celebratory dinner held in Grand Forks after the competition captured one of the memorable moments of the journey, highlighting both the team’s accomplishment and the significance of UND’s inaugural appearance at the competition.

The students’ dedication, resilience, and willingness to embrace a new challenge made the experience especially meaningful, setting a strong foundation for future participation.
