UND Law Students and Alumni Selected for North Dakota Supreme Court Clerkships

All five clerks selected for the 2027-2028 term have ties to the University of North Dakota School of Law, including four members of the Class of 2027 and one 1990 graduate.

The North Dakota Supreme Court has selected four members of the UND School of Law Class of 2027 and one graduate of the Class of 1990 to serve as law clerks for the 2027-2028 term.

Ross Baumgardner, of Bismarck, is pursuing both a Juris Doctor from UND School of Law and a Master of Public Health from the UND School of Medicine & Health Science with UND’s joint J.D. M.P.H. program. He previously earned a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Concordia College and a Master of Science in Educational Leadership from Minnesota State University Moorhead.

Kristi Carpenter, of Moffit, earned a Bachelor of Arts in History and Political Science from the University of Jamestown. She is expected to receive her Juris Doctor from UND School of Law in May 2027.

Lorraine Coronato, of Sidney, Montana, earned a Bachelor of Science in Sociology from Black Hills State University. She is expected to receive her Juris Doctor from UND School of Law in May 2027.

Faith Scheuer, of Bismarck, earned a Bachelor of Science in History and a Master of Public Policy from North Dakota State University. She is expected to receive her Juris Doctor from UND School of Law in May 2027.

James Nicolai, brings a longstanding connection to UND Law. A resident of Ellendale and Fargo, Nicolai earned his bachelor’s degree from North Dakota State University in 1986 before attending the University of North Dakota School of Law, where he graduated in 1990. He is a current member of the State Bar Association of North Dakota.

The selection of all five clerks with ties to UND School of Law highlights the enduring relationship between North Dakota’s only law school and the state’s legal community. From students preparing to enter the profession to an experienced alumnus, the 2027-2028 clerkship class represents multiple generations of UND Law graduates serving the state.

The new clerks will begin their one-year terms with the North Dakota Supreme Court on Aug. 1, 2027.
