DeMers recognized for outstanding service by the Association of American Medical Colleges

Judy DeMers, associate dean for student affairs and admissions at the School of Medicine and Health Sciences, was awarded the Central Group Outstanding Service Award at the national meeting of the Group on Student Affairs of the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC). DeMers received the award at the meeting in Austin, Texas, on April 19.

In nominating DeMers for the award, Daniel A. Burr, assistant dean for student financial planning at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine said, “In the 30 years that I have been a member of the Group on Student Affairs, I know of no other colleague with a more impressive involvement in educational, social and health care issues. We have been fortunate to have her as a member of our region for 27 years.”

The AAMC represents all 132 accredited U.S. and 17 accredited Canadian medical schools; approximately 400 major teaching hospitals and health systems, including 68 Department of Veterans Affairs medical centers; and nearly 90 academic and scientific societies. Through these institutions and organizations, the AAMC represents 125,000 faculty members, 75,000 medical students, and 106,000 resident physicians. The purpose of the four regional Groups on Student Affairs is to advance medical education and, specifically, to represent the interests of medical schools and medical students in the areas of admissions, student affairs, financial aid, diversity affairs and student records. The AAMC’s Central Region includes 32 medical schools located in 12 states.

“Judy has never hesitated to challenge the status quo or ask the difficult question,” said Burr. “She is a woman of few words, but they are strong. It is clear she speaks as one closely involved with her students and aware of the effects association policies can have on their lives.”
