Remembering Virginia Bentley Johnson

VJohnson1102Virginia Bentley Johnson, retired continuing education employee, died Nov. 1, 2010, at Three Links Care Center in Northfield, Minn..  She was 85.

She was was born Nov. 24, 1924, in Northwood, N.D., to Gilman and Alice (Marstuen) Bentley.  She was raised in Northwood, and while in the third grade moved with her family to Grand Forks. She graduated from Grand Forks Central High School in 1942, and after her education, she worked at UND. She married Stanley Johnson in 1946. They divorced in the 1960s and Virginia worked in the continuing education department until retiring in 1989. She was hurt in a fall in 1993, and after 10 months of rehabilitation, returned home. She moved to Northfield, Minn., in 2008 to be near her daughter Julie.

Virginia was a member of the United Lutheran Church in Grand Forks and Beta Sigma Phi business sorority.

She is survived by her two children, Nancy and husband Russ Melland of Grand Forks, Julie and husband Mike Kopp of Northfield, Minn.; grandchildren, Matt Johnson of Portland, Ore., Eric of Grand Forks, Alison and Michael Kopp of Northfield; and other relatives and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister Harriet Winslow, and her brothers Stanford and Gorman Bentley.

Interment will be at Memorial Park Cemetery in Grand Forks.  In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the Three Links Care Center Pathways Unit, 815 Forest Avenue, Northfield, Minn., 55057.
