Elmer was born March 1, 1923 in Munich, N.D., to Gottfried and Mary (Steinley) Schmiess. He married Dorothy Meyer on July 11, 1951. They celebrated 62 blessed years of marriage until Dorothy passed away six months ago.

Elmer was devoted to his family and took pride in teaching, helping others, and working outdoors. His generosity, sense of humor, and unconditional love will be dearly missed by all the lives he touched.

In Kenmare, N.D. he served as a high school teacher, principal, and superintendent. He moved to Grand Forks in 1968 and was a professor at the University of North Dakota until retirement.

Elmer is survived by four children: Pamela (Kevin) Carlson, Kelli (Bob) Schmiess, Bonni (Brian) Gourneau, and Ronda (Todd) Pokrzywinski; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy, daughter Patty Lane, parents, brother, and two sisters.

In honoring Elmer’s wish, a private family memorial service was held at United Lutheran Church.
