May Wellness Spotlight

May: Mental Health Awareness Month

May is recognized as Mental Health Awareness Month, a time dedicated to raising awareness about mental health, and encouraging open conversations about the topic. Mental health is very important for overall well-being, and can be often overlooked. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), more than 1 in 5 adults in the United States experience a mental health condition each year. Factors that contribute to poor mental health include: stress, academic or work demands, and lack of sleep. It is important to recognize these challenges early.

Mental Health Awareness Month was established to promote education and reduce stigma surrounding mental health. By increasing awareness, individuals will be better educated and will be able to help others who are struggling with mental health. Mental health includes maintaining emotional balance and coping with stress.

Why Mental Health Matters:

  • Mental health affects how we think daily
  • Poor mental health can contribute to physical health issues
  • Early support can prevent more serious challenges

Common Signs to Pay Attention To:

  • Ongoing stress or anxiety
  • Changes in sleep patterns
  • Difficulty staying on task or staying motivated

Ways to Support Your Mental Health:

  • Stay physically active
  • Maintain a consistent sleep schedule
  • Seek support from your family and friends
  • Set realistic goals
  • Seek professional help if needed

The National Institute of Mental Health emphasizes that mental health conditions are common and treatable, and seeking help is a sign of strength. There are many resources that provide screenings and guidance for those looking to better manage their mental health.

Building a Strong Foundation:

Mental health is built through consistent daily habits and supportive environments. Small actions, such as staying physically active, talking to a friend, or setting aside time to relax, can all have a major impact in well-being. Mental health plays a vital role in overall quality of life. It is important to prioritize awareness and take steps toward well-being to create a more supportive community. This May, take time to check in with yourself and others because everyone’s mental health matters!
