Remembering Corinne Nelson

Corinne Nelson, retired supervisor of Student Health Services, Warren, Minn., passed away Oct. 5, 2018, in North Star Manor, Warren. She was 83.

Corinne Mae Carlson was born on March 13, 1935, in Warren, to Wilmoth J. and Pearl (Schumacher) Carlson. She attended Warren High School and, following her graduation in 1953, moved to Minneapolis, earning her nursing certification from Abbott Northwestern. She was united in marriage to Merle Nelson on Dec. 26, 1955, and the couple made their home on a farm in rural Alvarado, Minn.

In addition to raising their two children, she was a full time nurse. In her 50-plus year nursing career, Corinne worked many different jobs, including as a floor nurse and special duty nurse at the Warren Hospital, a Marshall County Public Health nurse, a school nurse in Alvarado, and as rehab nurse in Grand Forks. She taught Health Occupation in Warren and East Grand Forks and attended knowledge bowls in Florida with her students.

The capstone of her career was as Supervisor at UND Student Health, where she retired in 2008.

Apart from nursing, Corinne was also very involved in music and her church. She was a lifelong member of Zion Lutheran Church in Warren and played organ there from the age of 15, only stopping in recent years. She taught Sunday school and was active in the LWML. Corinne was a member of “Second Wind” band, and played trombone with them for several years. She was also very active in following and cheering on her grandchildren throughout their high school and college sporting events.

She is survived by her children, Rebecca (Peter) Erickson of Viking, MN, and Robert Nelson (Jean) of Alvarado, MN; two grandchildren, Christian (Danae) Erickson of Warren, MN, and Alexandra Erickson of Viking, MN; brother, John (Sharon) Carlson of Moorhead, MN; and nieces and nephews, John, Mitch, Jodi and Jill.

Corinne was preceded in death by her parents.
