Native Dancer: Reflections from GamesBeat Summit 2025

Author: Ariann Rousu – Native Dancer Digital Artist

Summary

Attending the GamesBeat Summit was a powerful experience for the Native Dancer team. It gave us a chance to step outside our development bubble and see how our work fits into the broader landscape of the gaming industry. From panels on inclusive design to conversations about emerging tech, the summit offered a lot of insight and inspiration.

Learning From the Industry

One of the biggest takeaways from GamesBeat was seeing how other teams are approaching storytelling, representation, and community-building in games. It was encouraging to see that many of the values we hold like cultural authenticity, collaboration, and accessibility are being echoed across the industry. It also gave us a clearer picture of where Native Dancer fits in and how we can continue to grow.

Shaping Our Next Moves

The summit helped us think more strategically about how we collaborate as a team and how we can deepen the Native Dancer experience. We’re taking what we learned and applying it to our summer goals: refining the demo, strengthening our narrative and visual design, and preparing to communicate our vision more clearly to potential partners and funders. We are excited to pursue other opportunities that connections from the GamesBeat summit may bring. So far we have been invited to participate in gaming communities that are working toward similar goals, as well as discord channels that involve other niche groups that can benefit us.

What’s to Come?

This summer, we’re focused on getting Native Dancer to a place where we feel confident sharing it more widely. That means tightening up the demo, aligning our goals as a team, and continuing to build a community around the project. GamesBeat reminded us that we’re not alone in this work and that there’s a place for Native-led, culturally grounded games in the industry.
