Talon Training, Spring 2026
Join the UND research community this spring as we explore new ways to use the Talon supercomputer more effectively. The UND Computational Research Center (CRC) will host a series of one-hour, hands-on workshops designed to provide practical training, collaborative learning, and guidance for both new and experienced Talon users. All sessions will take place in Learning Space 301 at the Chester Fritz Library.
Workshops
- Welcome to Talon — March 18, 3:00pm
Learn the essentials of using the Talon supercomputer for research or coursework. This introductory workshop covers how to access the system, navigate the environment, run basic jobs, and follow best practices for being a responsible cluster user. Perfect for new users or anyone wanting a smooth start.
- Data Transfer & Sharing with Globus — April 1, 3:00pm
Discover how to move and share data efficiently using Globus, a powerful, secure platform widely used in research computing. This session demonstrates how to transfer files to and from Talon, manage shared datasets, and streamline collaboration with partners at other institutions.
- Getting Started with R & RStudio — April 15, 3:00pm
Connect to RStudio on Talon and learn how to use R in a high‑performance computing environment. You’ll practice installing and loading R packages, running code on the cluster, and applying recommended workflows for efficient analysis at scale.
- Intermediate Slurm (NEW) — April 29, 3:00pm
Take your Slurm skills to the next level. This workshop reviews the fundamentals of Slurm job scripts and then digs deeper into how the scheduler manages workloads. You’ll explore job arrays, job dependencies, and strategies for optimizing your jobs to run more efficiently on Talon.
