Remembering Herman M. Zahradka

Herman M. Zahradka, 79, Grand Forks, N.D., passed away Thursday, May 20, at Altru Hospital.

Herman Michael Zahradka was born March 21, 1931, the son of John J. and Lucy (Shereck) Zahradka in Lankin, N.D. Before moving to Grand Forks and as a young man, Herman grew up in Lankin, working and running the family farm with his brothers. On September 18, 1970, Herman married Rita Carl, and raised their family in Grand Forks. After 37 exceptional years, Herman retired as a Heavy Equipment Operator from University of North Dakota. He was a very dedicated worker and took pride in all his accomplishments.

Herman thrived on being a husband, father and friend. He enjoyed spending summers with his wife, children and grandchildren at their lake cottage in Minn., where he spent his days, fishing and boating. You could find “Mr. Fix-it” building or working on his many projects, but he always had time to bandage skinned knees. He loved spending time outdoors for work and pleasure. Herman’s faith and family were the highlights of his life.

He is survived by his wife, Rita; daughters, Kari Gaddie (Don Burris), Grand Forks, N.D., Kristin (Craig) Spradlin, East Grand Forks, Minn. and Kelli (Chad) Bohn, Harwood, N.D.; grandchildren, Alizabeth, Brianna and Blake Gaddie, Addisyn and Zoey Spradlin; sister-in-law, Ann (Mrs. Leonard) Zahradka, West Fargo, N.D.

Herman was preceded in death by his parents, his granddaughter, Amy Jo Gaddie, parents and brothers, John, Leonard, and Ronald

Mass of Christian Burial: 1 p.m. Tuesday, May 25, at Holy Family Catholic Church, Grand Forks, N.D.
