Services are set for Loran Carl

loren carlLoran J. Carl, facilities management, passed away Wednesday, Dec. 1, at Bethesda Hospital in Saint Paul. He was 74.

Loran John Carl was born Oct. 30, 1936, in Grand Forks to Jess Gabriel and Carrie Caroline (Frye) Carl. Loran attended Saint Mary’s grade school in Grand Forks, Polk County country school, East Grand Forks Central, and graduated from Sacred Heart High School in 1954. He served his country as a member of the Army Reserves. Loran married Anita Burton on July 3, 1958, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church. They built their home on James Avenue in 1961. Loran worked for the Bill Larson Company, Grand Forks Linoleum, before operating Carl’s Carpet Center until 1982, and then returned to the Bill Larson Company before starting to work for the University of North Dakota facilities department in 1988 where he worked until his passing.

Loran loved spending time with his family; he enjoyed the family trips to the Frozen Four, watching the Fighting Sioux hockey team, woodworking and various projects with his boys.

Loran is survived by his wife, Anita (Burton); sons, Shaun of East Grand Forks, Randy of Burnsville, MN, Chris (Megan) of Joliet, IL, and Jason (Heather) of West Bend, WI; grandchildren, Samantha, Travis, Alexandra, William and Christina Carl; sisters, Marilyn (Keith) Barry, Rita Zahradka, and Wayne (Susan) Carl, all of Grand Forks; several nieces and nephews, and several step brothers and sisters.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Jess, Ralph; sisters, Lorna Lange, Linda Jeffrey and several step brothers and sisters.

Funeral Mass: 2 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 9, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, East Grand Forks, MN.

Family Greeting: 4:30 to 7 p.m. Wednesday with a 6 p.m. prayer service and 4 p.m. rosary service in the Gregory J. Norman Funeral Chapel, 2950 S. Washington St., Grand Forks. Family greeting will continue for one hour prior to the liturgy in the church on Thursday.

Interment: Garden of the Evangelist Columbarium, Calvary Cemetery, Grand Forks.

Military Honors: Members of the American Legion Post 157, Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3817 and the North Dakota National Guard.
