June: Summer Sun Safety and Hydration

June marks the beginning of summer for most people, and it brings warmer temperatures, longer days, and more fun activities outdoors. It is very important to take steps to protect yourself from excessive sun exposure and harmful UV rays. It is also crucial to stay hydrated to prevent heat-related illnesses. The sun can provide many amazing benefits for your overall health, yet too much exposure can quickly become dangerous. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), prolonged exposure to ultraviolet radiation increases the risk of skin cancer, while dehydration and heat-related illnesses can affect anyone.

Sun safety is an important part of maintaining overall health. UV rays can be damaging year-round, but they are most dangerous in the summer when people spend more time outdoors. Even on a cloudy day, UV rays can still be damaging as they break through the clouds. Excessive sun exposure without sunscreen can lead to sunburn and an increased risk of skin cancer later in life.

Hydration is also very important during the summer. Water helps regulate body temperature and support normal bodily functions. During hot days, the body loses fluid faster than usual through sweat. This can lead to dehydration with symptoms such as headaches, fatigue, and dizziness. Severe hydration can become a medical emergency if not treated.

Why Sun Safety and Hydration Matter:

  • Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States
  • UV radiation can cause damage, even on cloudy days
  • Dehydration can lead to a decline in energy and mental focus
  • Proper hydration and sun protection help support overall health

Tips for Staying Safe in the Sun, according to Johns Hopkins Medicine:

  • Generously apply sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 to all exposed skin
  • Wear protective clothing, such as a long-sleeved shirt, pants, and a hat
  • Seek shade when appropriate
  • Use extra caution near water and sand as they reflect the damaging rays of the sun

Ways to Stay Hydrated:

  • Drink water consistently throughout the day
  • Carry a reusable water bottle
  • Increase water intake during exercise

Enjoy Summer Safely:

Summer offers many opportunities to stay active and enjoy time outdoors. However, it is very important to make sun protection and hydration a priority. Small habits, such as applying sunscreen frequently and drinking water throughout the day can help prevent illness and protect long-term health. Taking these simple steps in the summer can help you make the most out of the summer season and stay healthy!
