Lyle Mauland
Lyle Mauland

Lyle Edgar Mauland, associate professor emeritus of mathematics, died Oct. 20, 2016 in Heartland Terrace, Valley 4000. He was 87.

Lyle was born on July 5, 1929 in Montevideo, Minnesota to Bernhard and Nettie (Brenden) Mauland. Lyle grew up on the family farm in Cottonwood Minnesota.

After graduating from Cottonwood High School in 1947 Lyle studied at Concordia College in Moorhead, MN for one year. He then moved to Winona State College where he completed his bachelor’s degree in Mathematics, also earning a teaching license in May 1951. In August 1951 Lyle entered the Army serving during the Korean War as a Photo Interpreter. Lyle transferred to the Army Reserves in July 1953 and was honorably discharged in July 1960.

After returning from Korea, Lyle taught in Morton MN for one year before moving back to Cottonwood where he taught mathematics for the next four years as well as coaching the basketball team. While at Cottonwood Lyle took summer classes and earned his Master’s degree from UND in 1959. Lyle became a regular faculty member in the UND Mathematics Department in the fall of 1959.

On December 22, 1959 Lyle married Marjorie Ellen Seebart in Grand Forks. The couple built a home north of UND and lived there until illness required them to move in 2013. With the exception of a two year leave of absence at Denver, Lyle taught classes at UND every year from 1959 until his retirement in 1991. Lyle received his Ph.D. in mathematics education in 1980 from the University of Denver. At one point Lyle received the B.C. Gamble Award for excellence in teaching.

Lyle was active in the North Dakota Council of Teachers of Mathematics and for a period of time served as president of the NDCTM. One of Lyle’s more fulfilling activities was his work as a faculty adviser for several years to Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, a student organization at UND.

After retirement Lyle enjoyed many more years of playing golf with his old Mathematics Department colleagues as well as attending most of the lunches and picnics that the Mathematics Department faculty and staff organize each year. Lyle also enjoyed learning wood carving. Lyle along with many of his retired colleagues joined the AARP Tax Aide Program after retirement. Lyle worked as a volunteer for the program for 13 years helping hundreds of low income and elderly clients file their income tax returns for free.

Lyle is survived by his wife of 55 years Marjorie; his nephews Jeffrey (Lynn) Mauland and Family and Philip (Amy) Mauland and family all of Cottonwood Minnesota; his niece Susan (Jim) Kelton of Denver, Colorado.

He was preceded in death by his parents Bernhard and Nettie (Brenden) Mauland and brother Burton T. Mauland.
