While a VEX Robotics team is new to UND campus, Thea is no stranger to the competition series. She’s been involved with middle and high school teams for a long time — and still is. While she competes at the collegiate-level on UND’s VEX-U team, she and her teammates help mentor middle and high school teams in the community.

Last spring, UND’s Office of Research and Economic Development established the Early Career Scholars Program (ECSP), a project designed to kick-start the careers of researchers transitioning from Ph.D. and postdoc programs to full-time faculty. Anjali Sandip receives NSF grant to study melting glaciers

Anjali Sandip, a senior lecturer in UND’s Department of Mechanical Engineering, has received a National Science Foundation grant that will help her and her colleagues study the impact on sea levels of melting Antarctic ice sheets.
In a cross-collaborative project, University of North Dakota psychology students are using a military Humvee for research. The group is using eye-tracking, EEG and Emotion Tracking software during a live-drive simulation to study the effects of a drive and a passenger during military operations.

Andrew Freeman Competition team takes the cake

In the spirit of making life a little sweeter, the winners of the 2023 Andrew Freeman Design Innovation Competition created a contraption called the “Batter Shaker,” which shakes cake batter on a platform to remove bubbles that cause voids in a cake. The four-person team of University of North Dakota (UND) engineering students responded to a request from a national company to develop the appliance. They impressed the competition sponsors at Minnkota with their simple ingenuity and teamwork and were awarded the $2,000 prize for demonstrating the innovative spirit of Minnkota’s first leader.
