MS2: Information from Dr. Porter

I would like to welcome the MD Class of 2024 back from their Phase 1 electives and am looking forward to seeing you back at the main school building. I hope you took some time for yourselves as your medical education will start ramping up from here until the start of your clinical rotations. Along with finishing up your preclinical coursework (Units 6-8), your clinical skills will be further honed at the Simulation Center to prepare you for your required clinical experiences. Finally, as you are already aware, you will be required to pass a standardized Comprehensive Basic Science Examination (CBSE), often referred as the “gateway examination” to be promoted to Phase 2 of the curriculum. I would recommend setting aside dedicated study time to your schedule so that you are prepared to pass this exam by the end of Unit 8. Please consult Dr. Carr, Dr. Kalyanasundaram, or Val Becker if you are unsure of how to add this additional habit to your busy study schedule. A major consequence for not passing the CBSE after Unit 8 includes delaying your promotion to Phase 2. I would like to remind you that asking for help is not a sign of weakness, but instead is a valuable life skill. Therefore, make the decision to ask for help sooner rather than later.
