Updates and announcements from the UND Office of Human Resources

Understanding and Using Your Leave

UND offers annual and sick leave, holiday, and other leave time off to benefited employees. The UND HR website provides in-depth information regarding UND’s leave offerings. The Office of Human Resources is always available to help you understand and utilize your leave benefit. Find out more about using & reporting leave. We’ve highlighted three areas of leave provided to support you, one of our Hawks at Work.

Take Time Off

Employees who earn leave must use 40 hours of vacation (prorated for part-time) each year. If it’s your first year with UND, this requirement doesn’t apply to you yet. You can only carry over 240 hours (prorated for part-time). These two requirements are set to encourage employees to make use of the benefits provided to them and ensure employees limit the burnout & fatigue they might experience by otherwise never taking time away from work.

Have a conversation with your supervisor about when would be the best time to use your time off. Some employees may take their time all at once, while others may choose to extend a handful of weekends by taking an additional Monday or Friday off.

Is the Flu going through your house? Time to use Dependent Sick Leave.

You are allowed to take up to 80 hours per year of your existing sick leave balance for the time you need off due to the illness of an eligible dependent. This allows you the flexibility to use your sick leave when the latest virus has taken out 3/4 of your household, and you need a day or two for your spouse or kiddos to recover. Additionally, this benefit allows flexibility if you are trying to save your annual leave for vacation, but need flexibility throughout the year to take care of a loved one intermittently.

Consider Leave Donation

If you are unable to use your leave, employees who have been approved to receive donated leave would greatly appreciate any donations of your use-or-lose leave. You can donate up to 5% of your current sick leave balance and any amount of your annual leave balance to employees approved to receive donated leave.  If you are interested in donating leave, contact Joanne Barstad at joanne.barstad@UND.edu  or 701.777.2156.
